Interview: Viscosity Vintage

Meet Viscosity Vintage

When I met the creative minds behind Viscosity Vintage, I was sitting in a room full of models, waiting until it was my turn to walk the runway.  Viscosity Vintage needed one more model for their show during Gainesville Fashion Week, and after finding out what size shoe I wore, I was their girl.  Sisters Rejina and Valesca are always an adorable presence that commands the attention of the room.  After meeting with the girls many times over the next coming months for fittings, photo shoots for their online store, and just to have fun, I soon found that they are always dressed to the nines and their style is unique and never boring.  Their attitudes and personalities are just as sweetly cute as their outward appearance.  It is my pleasure that I get to know and interview such lovely and creative people.

1. What is your Brand name & where did it come from?

The name Viscosity Vintage is the result of a bunch of sisters brainstorming for the perfect name for our vintage store. Really, our youngest sister (who is a pre-med major) suggested it after taking a chemistry class. Viscosity basically means resistance to flow. Once we heard that we thought it was perfect! It sounds fierce and embodies our vision for our brand, which is to do something different by resisting the regular flow of fashion trends and creating our own mark.

2. What made you decide to go into the fashion industry?

We are super passionate about fashion and it is such a big creative expression for us day to day. We love to create unique fashionable looks and wanted to share that with others, so deciding to go into the fashion industry was a natural move.

 3. What is your inspiration?

Creativity is really what inspires us. There are so many different ways to do things and we want to explore them all. We are always focused on thinking outside of the box and that really inspires what we do.

Viscosity Vintage: Resist the Flow

4. Is there a particular message that you want to convey?

Yes, resist the flow of things and make your own mark. See for yourself at www.wearviscosity.com.

5. What can we look forward to from you (i.e., events, collections, social media, etc)?

Keep an eye out for a series of promotions including sales and deals, a new website, greater social media presence (updated blog, Facebook page, and Twitter page), look out for us on other fashion communities such as LOOKBOOK and Chictopia, and you may just catch us at your local fashion show! So get ready for us in 2012. We certainly have big plans.

6. What are you goals (immediate or long term)?

Immediate: Increase brand awareness

Long term: Expanding Viscosity beyond vintage into other areas including menswear, shoes, etc. We want to be a household name in fashion forward wear.

7. Who are some of your favorite designers and why?

Ralph Lauren- his pieces are so classic, they’ll never go out of style which makes for great investment pieces.

Louis Vuitton- a lot of nice, classic accessories that are durable and pretty easy to maintain. We like to think that someday we can pass these pieces on to younger generations in our family and it will mean something.

Giuseppe Zanotti- fabulous statement shoes that are always unique with great colors to match!

Some of our favorite brands are JCrew and Banana Republic because they seem to be the mecca for classic clothes that you can keep forever. Also, we love Forever 21 for great, fun, and trendy pieces or for reasonably priced occasion outfits that you will wear only once.

8. What are some of your favorite trends?

Lately, we really like the hi-lo hem trend (short and leggy in the front and long in flowy in the back. Super cute!) We also love black and white striped blazers, anything with stripes or polka dots, capes, platform shoes, pleated chiffon skirts and chiffon blouses.

Viscosity Vintage Defines Fashion

9. How would you define fashion?

It’s a creative expression with articles of clothing that others can appreciate or admire.

10. How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic in one word. We really like to try it out and if we think it looks good, then it’s on. Usually people like what we put together so I guess it works out! We love mixing different styles together to create something a little different. Preppy, Classic, Chic, Urban, etc- it’s all fair game when it comes to creating looks. Our personal style is like one big salad bowl, you’re not really sure what you’re going to get in each bite but you know it will be yummy nonetheless.

About this fashion writer

Heather Jones wrote 3 articles on Fashion Parkway.

Fashion has always been a part of my life. My first fashion-obsession was when I was 5 years old. My parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I said, a white fur-coat. So the three of us headed out on what would be my first journey into the magical land of shopping, and we came home with a beautiful white, faux-fur. I have no idea where this desire came from. My mother owned no fur, and I doubt any of the other kindergartners were running wild, making any kind of lux fashion statements. From a very early age, my parents always allowed me to pick out my own clothes, which was sometimes not-so-hot (I lived through the ’90s), but I graduated high school with the senior superlative of “Best Dressed,” a title held dear to my heart and closet.
While working as a fashion consultant for a boutique, I earned my degree in fashion merchandising.
Now, in my 20s, I embarked on the wide-open sea that is, the internet, starting a blog: www.missprissheather.blogspot.com.
My journey soon led to my own column in the Winter Haven News Chief, “Budgeted Trends” http://www.newschief.com/. I also write “Looks of the Day” for INsite Magazine’s blog, http://www.insitegainesville.com/blog/. I am excited to be a part of the Fashion Parkway Team!
